Post-visit tasks

Activity 7: Develop a geographical explanation
Review the initial predictions you made before the virtual visit. Do you believe the data you collected and the evidence you found support your predictions? Identify the most significant things you have learned, and note whether any information or evidence has changed your way of thinking.
Next, write an independent, brief geographical explanation (150–200 words) to answer the following research question:
How does the nature of the Georges River landscape influence the occurrence of flooding, and how do these floods affect the people and places surrounding the river?
Your text must include the following:
At least two pieces of evidence drawn from images, maps, or official websites.
The use of a range of specialized geographical terminology.
An example of how residents and authorities respond to flood events.
An explanation of the relationship between flood risks and the nature of the river’s landscape.

Activity 8: Design a flood-awareness information card
To demonstrate your understanding of this research and help raise awareness, create a digital information card intended for students, friends, or families that explains why it is important to understand flood risks at the local level.
Include two key messages regarding the importance of heeding official warnings and provide a brief explanation of how geographic information contributes to enhancing community preparedness. Be sure to incorporate an illustrative map (containing data) or an appropriate image to aid visual understanding.
Base your content on reliable data from official sources and take care to avoid any suggestion that general maps or classroom activities could serve as a substitute for official local emergency guidance.
